| SHARIA LAW VS. CANON LAW. THERE IS AN INFINITE DIFFERENCE. |
| In a recent national interview, U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed shamefully equated Sharia Law with Catholic Canon Law. As a Muslim, El-Sayed absolutely knows that is not true. |
| Sharia Law is the law of the state imposed by theocratic regimes in Iran, Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, Egypt, Sudan and other hardline Muslim nations. Sharia law dictates an entire legal, moral and social code — and is imposed by government coercion, weaponry, and criminal laws.
As El-Sayed knows, sharia law requires women to wear a hijab or burqa in public — or face a fine or even imprisonment. Women are not allowed to travel, marry, or hold a job without approval from a man. Girls are forbidden to receive an education past age 15. And converting to Christianity or speaking critically of Islam carries penalties that may include death. Meanwhile, canon law regulates only the internal administration and religious life of the Catholic Church. It imposes no fines, no prison time, no death sentence. Girls and women are educated in Catholic schools and colleges. And canon law imposes absolutely no burden on non-Catholics. Instead, non-Catholics are invited to explore the Faith and freely join or reject the Catholic Church. To equate Sharia law with canon law is dishonest. Sharia law demeans and devalues women. It is un-American. And it does not belong in Michigan. |
