Ignatius Press has released my new book Upon this Rock: St. Peter and the Primacy of Rome in the Scriptures and Early Church. See the book, read reviews and excerpts or purchase it by clicking on the title above or call Ignatius Press at 1-800-651-1531 or on their website www.ignatius.com. This is a list of the books that I used in my research. I hope the bibliography is helpful for those embarking on a thorough study of Peter and the Primacy of Rome, both from the Scriptures and the history of the Church. The books are listed in alphabetical order by author. The books can be placed in four categories:
- General reference works, not specifically addressing the Petrine Primacy, such as Bible dictionaries, encyclopedias, etc.
- Books specifically about Peter among which there are many excellent books. Many are out of print yet through searching they are now in my library.
- Books that are blatantly anti-Catholic. I have noted them with the words “Anti-Catholic”. These books set out with the unabashed goal of discrediting or disproving the Catholic Church and they tend to show a marked hostility.
- Many others books are Protestant, Eastern Orthodox or generally non-Catholic though they are not necessarily hostile to the Catholic Church and therefore not considered “anti-Catholic”. There is helpful material in most of these books.

Mr. Ray,
First off, thank you for all of your work and scholarship in defense of the Catholic faith. Your talks and books have been immeasurably helpful in my intellectual formation and spiritual growth.
I was hoping you could answer a few questions about a couple of books.
Have you read or heard of the following books regarding Peter and the primacy of Rome:
The History of the Council of FLorence by Ivan N. Ostroumov Aleksandr Vasil?evich Gorski?
Orestes Brownson’s work, essays, articles? I heard he was an ardent defender of the papacy, but I’m having a hard time finding anything from him.
Ivan “Jean” Gagarin (He was a convert from Russian Orthodoxy, and is supposed to be an ardent defender of the papacy. I think a lot of his work hasn’t been translated into English, yet. But I was hoping you had access to his works and could direct me.
Thank you,
Paul Boxer
STEVE RAY HERE: Sorry I am not aware of these authors.
Thanks for replying, Steve. Your time and feedback are greatly appreciated.
A friend of mine suggested I read Orestes Brownson. He was supposed to by like “America’s John Henry Newman,” or something of that nature. My friend also told me that Brownson was an ardent defender of the papacy, but most of his apologetics on the papacy and primacy of Rome were in article/essay format in periodicals of his day, so perhaps there isn’t much in the form of books 🙁
Also, I’m told than Brownson was a champion of early conservative American political thought . . .
