My friend is a special ed teacher in a grammar school in a Chicago suburb that has a large Muslim population, she remarked on the high incidence of birth defects in the children ranging from mental retardation to blindness as a result of the Muslim custom of intermarriage. This is more alarming than a simple demographics issue.

I wonder if you mean to say “inbreeding” (e.g, having children with siblings/cousins) vs. intermarriage, which would be marrying someone of a different faith/ethnicity. This is an interesting consideration, though.
