I think it is a crying shame. Ignatius Press should be the publisher of this new book just like they have the publisher of the Pope's earlier books (as Cardinal Ratzinger). They have proved over the last few years that they were up to the task; they could have handled this book well too, and done the the Pope and the Church proud. But now Doubleday, publisher of The DaVinci Code has been given the rights to publish it. I suspect the Pope is steamed — I know I am.

In Italy, journalists have intrigued by the irony: A new book by Pope Benedict XVI (bio – news) will be brought out in the US by the same publisher who gave us The Da Vinci Code. After Vatican officials condemned that novel for conveying “hatred and gratuitous defamation” against the Catholic faith, why would they choose the same publisher for the Pope’s work?
That’s a good question. But here’s another: Why did the Vatican allow sale of the publishing rights to Doubleday, when Pope Benedict already had a publication agreement with an eminently respectable Catholic publisher in America?
