After leaving Dubravnik Croatia and Corfu Greece we set “sail” for Katakolon in the Peloponese Islands of Greece. This is the home of the original Olympics which started in 776 BC.
We visited the site and museum. The word “stadium” derives from the name given to the distance of the race – one stadia. The second kind of race was two stadia – there and back, called a diaulos.
That is what I challenged every one to run at the original “stadium”. In Olymic times the runners ran naked – not me. But with such a “great cloud of witnesses” I did “cast aside every encumberance to run the race” (Heb 12:1-2) – namely my vest and hat.
It was a hard race and yours truly came in 2nd to a youger man who is a sprinter- not bad for an old 52 year old guy 🙂
But it was great exhausting fun under a hot sun (pictures when I get on the internet again). Also such things give great insight into Scripture (see 1 Cor 9:24-27). Afterward I wove myself a perishable wreath (crown) from the local trees for completing the race.
Today we are docked in the ancient lake of Santorinia which was created by a huge volcano – hope it doesn’t blast again or we will be sky high engulfed in lava.
I am preparing my talks on Athens and Corinth. Over night we head for Kusadasi in Turkey to visit Ephesus and have Mass at Mary’s House.
