Bishops required by canon law to refuse Communion to pro-abortion politicians: Vatican official

Archbishop Raymond Burke has repeated his argument that bishops are obligated by canon law to withhold Communion from public officials who support legal abortion. “The Church’s law is very clear,” the archbishop told LifeSite News in an exclusive interview. Archbishop Burke, formerly of the St. Louis archdiocese, speaks with considerable authority on matters of canon law, since he is now the head of the Apostolic Signatura, the Church’s top canonical court.

LifeSite reports:
Archbishop Burke called “nonsense” the accusation, regularly made by some bishops, that refusing Holy Communion “makes the Communion rail a [political] battle ground.”

I asked my parish priest why Nancy Pelosi hasn’t been excommunicated. He said softly, “or at least been denied communion”, and that I wasn’t the only person who asked the question, but he had no further answer at the time. This was in a meeting devoted to my education to become a Catholic. I would still like to know the rest of the answer. It seems to me Mrs. Pelosi has been brazen both in her support of abortion, and her concurrent statements of being an “ardent Catholic.” I think Archbishop Burke is absolutely right. Of course the Church will be criticized if it takes action, so what? I am going through a difficult annulment process convinced that it is right for the Church to uphold God’s Word in the matter of divorce and remarriage. I think the matter of outspoken pro-death politicians is equally clear.

STEVE RAY HERE: THIS MAY BE A STORY OR THE TRUTH, I DON’T KNOW. A FATHER TOOK HIS SON TO THE CONSECRATION OF A BISHOP. THE OTHER BISHOPS WERE ALL STANDING AROUND THE CANDIDATE LAYING THEIR HANDS ON HIS HEAD. THE SON ASKED HIS DAD, “WHAT ARE THEY DOING TO THAT MAN DAD?” HE ANSWERED, “THEY ARE REMOVING HIS SPINE.”

I AM SORRY TO SAY THAT MOST OF THE REASONS WHY PRO-ABORT POLITICIANS AND OTHERS LIKE THEM ARE NOT REPRIMANDED OR EXCOMMUNICATED IS FOR THAT VERY REASON. TOO MANY ARE AFRAID TO DO WHAT THEY SHOULD DO AND TAKE THE PATH OF LEAST RESISTANCE. GOD HELP THE CHURCH.

HAVING SAID THAT, YOU ARE DEFINITELY IN THE RIGHT PLACE. WITH ALL ITS FLAWS AND WARTS, THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IS WHERE I WILL LIVE, WHAT I WILL FIGHT FOR, AND WHERE I WILL DIE.
