Steve, how does someone who writes a book titled “Why Catholics are Right” leave? Just curious on why do you say he is a floppy commentator? What has been flopping on and for how long?

Sad indeed! It always amazes me when intelligent people zero in on one or two issues they cannot come to terms with, and trade them for the reality of things like the Real Presence in the Holy Eucharist etc. etc; Things they already ‘believe’ in. It’s sad, and we need to pray for Michael, and the many others like him.
How sad to hear, but not surprising considering everything Mr. Coren has written as of late. As the great man GK Chesterton once wrote “He who marries the spirit of the times will soon be a widower”. I have no doubt to truth of that statement in Mr. Coren’s case.
Michael in my mind was a true descendant of Esau, who sold his birthright to Jacob. Christians have proudly been doing that now for centuries flowering it with adjectives to show how wonderful their new church is. This does more to discredit Christianity than to lift it up. This people show an unstable character by jumping ship every time there’s a storm.
Coren’s book “Why Catholics are right” did more damage to Christian love and brotherhood than has been done in years.
IF THE FAITH were just a world of ideas…then Michael Coren would fit right in. But it isn’t. It is a world of knowing God (through prayer) and doing (God’s will) and alas, Michael hasn’t been good at either it would seem.
From his own admission Michael has been an peek-a-boo Anglican for about a year YET he didn’t cancel any of his Catholic engagements in the interim (no pun intended).
MC as “phoney RC”, was happy to appear, and still ready to appear (even recently), on Catholic Answers, Church Militant, the Interim, EWTN and others ALL THE WHILE he was participating in clown masses as a newly minted Anglican ingot! And traditional Catholics are the bad guys! Yes, us. For our shock and anger at his lack of integrity throughout the past year! And for our bothersome (to Michael C.) fidelity in faith and morals.
Michael Coren has always fragile, been easily put off, or scandalized. He left the faith before.
Minor comments from a certain archbishop troubled him (long ago) as did various, but reasonable (albeit angry) reactions by Catholics to gay agenda activists (recently), and global warming (not yet proven) hysteria. Michael dutifully reported about all this trivial commentary, but who was Coren doing his duty for? We’ll never know except possibly a strong expectation of his, of perfection, from everyone in the household of Faith.
Except, himself.
I hope that Michael experiences a miracle. He needs one to break the bondage of apostasy, mental illness (had struggles in the past), possession, or whatever has overwhelmed him currently. May he will really hear Jesus, and not just read another book, or participate in those endless soliloquies Coren currently imagines are actual encounters with God in prayer.
And Steve you are right it was over the homosexual issue.
Coren announced in “I was wrong” he had evolved on this one issue, in a nationally syndicated column in June of last year.
“I am not prepared to throw around ugly terms like “sin” and “disordered” as if they were clumsy cudgels, or marginalize people and groups who often lead more moral lives than I do. I am sick and tired of defining the word of God by a single and not even particularly important subject.” Michael Coren
As another commentator stated elsewhere, obviously it is a bunch of issues if he has become an Anglican, now.
Michael prefers a playground Christianity where everyone gets along, and the Faith costs nothing, and certainly has no actual cross.
But Jesus said there IS a cost.
At all times.
In every generation.
That’s why our blessed Lord warned his listeners to count that cost of authentic discipleship and not be like the builder who builds, but who later gets jeered at…because he couldn’t finish (or writes a book entitled, “Why Catholics are Right” then leaves the faith 2 years later).

While it doesn’t affect my faith in the least that Michael Coren would switch churches over the gay marriage issue, what does concern me is all of his cult followers who might now blindly follow him.
Heretofore I considered Michael to be a very intelligent and educated person which makes his church switch even more puzzling. Out of all the Protestant denominations he could have picked, why Anglican? Was Sir Thomas More’s death in vain? I bet that even Henry VIII wouldn’t have accepted gay marriage. Curiously too, it’s only the Western Anglican Church hierarchy that has accepted gay marriage, and not the 3rd World hierarchy. Sounds pretty self-righteous and racist to me.
Besides, does Coren’s switch mean that he now accepts all of those theological distinctions which are different between the Catholic and Anglican Church?
I find it hard to believe that the Same Sex Marriage issue could be such a “deal breaker” for him. Given Coren’s staunch prolife stance, how about the fact that the Anglican Church was the first mainstream Protestant denomination to accept artificial birth control as being moral, in 1930? Either his Catholic faith wasn’t very strong to begin with, –which means he was a fraud when he wrote his book, “Why Catholics Are Right”—or . there is a much deeper issue at play here; like one of his kids has come out as being gay, and he couldn’t reconcile that.
Apparently he said “he would die for his faith”? Perhaps he meant “he would die to his faith”.
Either way, may God have mercy on his soul. “To those whom much is given, much is expected.”
Michael Coren is perhaps the greatest hypocrite ever on television, when it comes to matters of faith. A man who has spent decades defending the Catholic faith, pro – life stance, and traditional marriage has all of a sudden decided this faith is too primitive for him. Something is very fishy in this whole saga, yes, it appears one of his children may be gay and this caused him so much anguish that he felt it necessary to divorce himself from his religion so he could accept his child. What is the most shocking, is how much he used to yell at guests for taking positions that he now supports fully. Strange indeed.
How very very sad. I really liked Coren, but sometimes he could be very flippant. Of course we all have troubles with the Church from time to time, but we must rise above these differences. I think he might have felt isolated. In any case, we should pray for him and his family. Im sure, like the prodigal son he will come to his senses.
I personally think hes looking to be accepted.
