In a Newsweek column on prominent Catholics supporters of Barack Obama, theologian George Weigel notes that the American bishops have become insistent on the political duties of Catholics. “It seems unlikely that the bishops, having found their voices after discovering the limits of their patience, will back off in an Obama administration,” he writes. From Kansas City, Missouri, the outspoken Bishop Robert Finn writes in his diocesan paper that ‘pro-choice’ candidates are “inviting Catholics to put aside their conscience on this life and death issue.” The bishop adds: They want us to deny our conscience and ignore their callous disregard for the most vulnerable human life.”

Senators Barack Obama and John McCain sparred on abortion, among other issues, during the final televised debate of their presidential campaign. McCain said that the “Roe v. Wade” case was wrongly decided, but stopped short of saying that he would appoint only judges who agreed with him on that point; Obama said that he agreed with the “Roe” decision. McCain attacked Obama for his vote in the Illinois legislature against a bill that would have provided protection for babies born alive after an incomplete abortion.

A September poll of medical professionals showed that while 66% favor the use of stem cells taken from embryos, a majority (55%) recognize the ethical concerns with that approach. Most of those surveyed saw the use of stem-cells taken from adult sources as a logical means of avoiding those ethical problems.
