We have visited the Fortress of Herod near Bethlehem many times. Our DVD Jesus, the Word Became Flesh actually opens on the top of the Herodium Fortress overlooking Bethlehem. It is called the Herodium because the megalomaniac King Herod named hit after himself. The Jewish historian Josephus wrote that Herod was buried there but no one could ever find his tomb.
Now it has been discovered. By the way, this was the King Herod that had the baby boys slaughtered and who tried to get the Wise Men to betray the location of the new King of the Jews. For the whole story, click here. I can't wait to see it on our next trip.
