This is always an interesting topic that floods the phone lines. I am posting this again for the Drew Mariani Show today by popular demand discussing how we as Catholics can relate to and influence our family and friends – especially during the upcoming holidays.

Ready to go! Family life can cause tension and strife among those we love most. How can we take the high road and be a positive influence for Jesus and his Catholic Church?

To read my article in Catholic Answers Magazine, click here.

It used to be “Six Rules” but it is now “Seven Rules.”      Here they are: 1) Don’t Argue, 2) Love them more than ever, 3) Pray and make sacrifices, 4) Show the Joy of the Lord, 5) Do your homework, 6) Be patient, 7) Ask God to bring someone else into their lives to influence them because they are not going to listen to you.

Good advice! Let’s hope I can follow it. It is so difficult when you know you are right!

I, have found that the best argument, is a good question.

Hi Steve, I'm having a fun dialogue with a Protestant friend about general issues related to the Catholic Church. I usually consult your website as well as CatholicAnswers.com for more information. We're currently talking about priestly celibacy. I explained how the Church does not forbid people to marry but seminarians responding to the call of God voluntarily choose to be celibate for the sake of the Kingdom of God.

Where I'm not too clear with is how can someone called to the priesthood who wants to marry respond to that call. Does he have to decline ?

STEVE RAY HERE: In the western church if a man wants to be a priest he has to be celibate. If he does not want to be celibate then he cannot be a priest. In the eastern church priests can be married but bishops cannot. It’s a discipline the church has placed on priesthood so a priest can have their whole life to devote to Jesus and his church, just like Saint Paul says in 1 Corinthian’s chapter 7.

Thanks Steve. I had read the 1Corinthians chapter 7 before. But as I read it again like you indicated, new things started coming into light. Particularly I was concerned about Genesis 2:18 where it says it is not good for a man to be alone. But in 1 Corinthians 7:1 Paul says it is actaully good for a man not to touch a woman. Looks like it is contradiction but he’s actually emphasizing the importance of a life dedicated to God.
    God bless you Steve.
