Last week Marcus Grodi invited me to Coming Home Network to record a new episode of EWTN’s “The Journey Home” which will be aired the 1st week of Febrary.

We also recorded a segment of Deep in Scripture. We discussed John 2, Alcohol, Mary and Miracles (audio below). Check out the Coming Home Networks website – loaded with great material, recordings, testimonies and more.

Fr. Richard Simon says that it's an incorrect translation of "woman" at the John 2 wedding at Cana event. Fr. Simon says Christ would never talk to his mother that way. A better translation would be "my lady."

STEVE RAY HERE: Sorry, Fr. Simon is wrong. It is “woman” and ties back to Genesis 3:14 where God says, “I will put enmity between you and the woman”

OK, thanks, I understand the link to Genesis, and that is critical to understanding scripture. I agree. But I think the tone is what's in question. Is the tone "woman" as Jesus uses if back in first century Aramaic the same as the tone "woman" in modern day English?

STEVE RAY HERE: this is the problem with reading the Bible in English and American context and not in the original language in the context of 2000 years ago. The title Woman relating to a Woman was the Title of Honor. Emperors referred to their wives are lovers as “Woman”. I a have a good section on this in my book Saint Johns Gospel, a Commentary and Bible Study Guide.

Thank you Steve. I think that was Fr. Simon’s point. I’ll have to get your book. John’s Gospel is my favorite of the four.
