In response to the spread of the swine flu, the bishops of New Zealand “have requested that receiving Communion on the tongue, Communion wine from the chalice and shaking hands at the sign of peace at Masses in New Zealand cease,” according to the nation’s Catholic newspaper. In the nation of 4.2 million, there are 13 confirmed cases– and 96 suspected cases– of the disease.

Noting that “the need for the introduction of widespread liturgical adaptations for the prevention of the transmission of influenza in the dioceses of the United States of America is not evident at this time,” the Committee on Divine Worship of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has published answers to ten questions about swine flu and the liturgy.
