American pro-life leaders have warned that the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) is the most radical pro-abortion legislation ever proposed in Washington. Speaking to a Planned Parenthood audience during his presidential campaign, Barack Obama promised to sign FOCA as soon as he took office. But the president-elect does not have that option. FOCA has not yet been introduced in Congress, and knowledgeable pro-life veterans on Capitol Hill say that the bill has slim prospects for passage, particularly in the Senate.

In one of his last official acts before stepping down as US President, George W. Bush has proclaimed Sunday, January 18, as “National Sanctity of Human Life Day” for 2009. “The most basic duty of government is to protect the life of the innocent,” his proclamation notes. The designated day falls four days before the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision, and two days before the Inauguration of president-elect Barak Obama.
