In the Light of the Law looks at what kind of charism a criminal (or a sociopath) founder can bequeath: http://www.canonlaw.info/2009/02/maciel-was-criminal-or-sociopath-but.html
And George Weigel calls for immediate Vatican intervention in the Legion:

My heart goes out to the many great men in the Legion who don’t deserve the scandal of their founder. I know so many of the young seminarians in Rome, where I have lectured so many times. I know many LC priests around the world. They are orthodox, driven, and devout, ready to lay down their lives for Our Lord.
As this situation works its way out, remember to pray for these great men who will now have to refocus their lives, make monumental decisions, and live with this scar. I agree with George Weigel that there is much good and we want to save and redeem that great good!
Added March 3, 2009: A Homily by Fr. Groeschel:
THORNWOOD, New York, MARCH 2, 2009 (Zenit.org).- Here is the text of a homily given Feb. 20 by Father Benedict Groeschel, one of the founders of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, when he concelebrated Mass at the formation center of the Legionaries of Christ in Thornwood.
I thought this homily was excellent. I sent copies to my friends in the Legion.
