From my friend and Canon Lawyer Ed Peters:

Fr. Jenkins discovers canon law. Not.

Notre Dame President Fr. John Jenkins continues to flail about for an adequate response (though short of resigning, there isn’t an adequate response) to his monumental gaff of bestowing an honorary doctor of laws degree on a president who has spent his entire political career seeing to it that millions of human beings are excluded from the protection of law. Jenkin’s latest lunge is for the life ring stamped “canon lawyers we consulted”. Figures.

Letter to Fr. Jenkins and Notre Dame written by BishopBruskewitz on April 3, 2009

The Reverend John Jenkins, C.S.C, President, University of Notre Dame
400 Main Building, Notre Dame, IN 46556

Reverend and dear Father Jenkins:  Permit me to add my name as well to the long list of Bishops of the Catholic Church who are utterly appalled by your dedication to immorality and wrong-doing represented by your support for the obscenity called “The Vagina Monologues”, and your absolute indifference to the murderous abortion program and beliefs of this President of the united States.
The fact that you have some sort of past connection with the State of Nebraska makes it all the more painful that the Catholic people here have to see your betrayal of the moral teachings of the Catholic Church.
I can assure you of my prayers for your conversion, and for the conversion of your formerly Catholic University. I am

Sincerely yours in Christ Jesus,
The Most Reverend Fabian W. Bruskewitz
Bishop of Lincoln

Bishop D’Arcy may join Notre Dame students protesting Obama speech

The bishop whose diocese includes the University of Notre Dame has said that he might take part in student-led demonstrations protesting the commencement speech there by President Obama, the American Papist blog reports. Bishop John D’Arcy of Fort Wayne-South Bend, Indiana, who had earlier warned against “unseemly and unhelpful demonstrations,” reportedly expressed his support for the campus group NDResponse, and said that he would welcome “prayerful and dignified demonstrations” and might participate in them if his schedule allowed it.

There is a context for this travesty. It did not suddenly occur in an environment that supported Catholic teaching, it has occurred in an environment that has been sliding into secularism for decades. Where was the outrage when this president continued to support “The Vagina Monologues” play on campus? Where was the outrage when his predecessors did the same? The Catholicity of Notre Dame has been crumbling for years; the Catholic community has ignored this.

It is the same for marriage and baby killing. Pornography and birth control. We Catholics have behaved like frogs in a pot that was only slowly getting hotter (instead of boiling right away) and we never paid attention. But never does evil back down of its own accord once it gains a foothold. Now we have what we collaborated in by way of our indifference. Let us pray for Notre Dame, for Fr. Jenkins – and for forgiveness for our tepidity these past 4 decades.

I would not worry about Fr. Jenkins unless he publicly
has strayed from the Chuch’s teaching. Let’s ask for
God’s help instead of the other way around.
