A Movie to watch Again! “The Bucket List”

by Steve Ray on October 14, 2020

50180025-0B6B-4248-AEEE-43C66335C4CBWe’ve watched the movie before but I forgot how much we enjoyed it. There are a few crude elements to it but nothing that diminishes the overall Christian theme of the movie.

I am a bit sentimental I guess, but I did find tears rolling down my cheeks again towards the end of this movie, even though I’ve seen it a number of times before. Plus, it’s a lot of fun and quite entertaining.

If you haven’t watched “The Bucket List”, or if it’s been a while, it’s a good movie to watch with the family. It’s all about the meaning of life, faith in God and the importance of family relations. It supports the beauty of the Christian truth, marriage and the meaninglessness of skepticism or atheism or selfishness.

Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman are both excellent in their portrayal of two older men of very different lifestyles who are both dying of cancer. I won’t ruin the movie for you if you haven’t seen it so that’s all I’ll say.

Set a Date for the Family – Watch this Movie

by Steve Ray on September 10, 2020

Janet and I Like a good old movie once in a while, so this Saturday afternoon I took time to cook Janet one of her favorite dinners and watch a favorite old movie – black and white no less. After two hours of laughing, singing and even a tear or two we thought we should share it with you. Janet, my wife of few words, said ”Good dinner movie Honey and what a great movie.”

What was the movie?  It is a marvelous “Catholic” movie. If you’re Catholic you’ll LOVE it, if you’re not a Catholic you will LOVE it and even if you’re just a lover of good movies you will LOVE it. It shows how Catholics and Baptists can work together and everybody in the town joins in. You’ve gotta love the nuns!

50D4C213-7883-4ECB-81A2-663DF98407ECThe movie is entitled “The Lilies of the Field.” It stars Sidney Poitier and a group of prayerful immigrant German nuns and Mexicans in the desert out West. Poitier won an Academy Award for his performance (back when Academy Awards meant something).  The Mother Superior reminds me a little bit of mother Angelica :-)

I am sure there are a number of sources where you can get this movie, but we bought it on iTunes. (By the way, we discontinued cable, and all other TV sources decades ago and now just watch good movies and fun family and Catholic fare). If you haven’t cut the TV off yet and you’re a Catholic family, I suggest you do it sooner than later later for the salvation of your kids.

If you want to see a list of some of our favorite movies and the favorites of others as well visit my website here.

Here is the trailer:

Clarence ThomasMy wife and I watched “Created Equal: Clarence Thomas in his Own Words.” It was a fabulous biography of a young black boy abandoned by his father living in squalor in the Deep South during debilitating racial segregation. It is his story of perseverance, love for the Catholic faith, a rock-solid illiterate grandfather, and a hard-working mother.

He was raised Catholic, later rebelled and became a racist and a Marxist. He later learned about the Constitution of the United States and the unique country he was living in. This whole trajectory is not only fascinating but it led him to law school, to being a Federal judge and finally to the Supreme Court.

The gut-wrenching episode of his confirmation process demonstrated to him the evil of liberalism. To see Biden and Edward Kennedy grilling him was infuriating. But his courage and comeback were the things great movies are made of.

Screen Shot 2020-05-20 at 10.18.12 AMIt is a story of perseverance, conversion, tenacity, honesty, integrity and brilliance. Janet and I had the great honor of meeting with him a decade ago and it is still a moment I will not forget.

I sincerely encourage you to live stream it from PBS for the week or so that it is still offered for free. You can watch it here: https://www.pbs.org/show/created-equal-clarence-thomas-his-own-words/  If you check out this website there is a wonderful photo album of his childhood and later life.

PLEASE get the family together and watch this exciting and unforgettable story!
