This Convert Enticed Me to Convert – Dr. Thomas Howard

by Steve Ray on April 4, 2018

Dr  Thomas Howard’s book Evangelical is Not Enough really started our conversion process. Janet read it and wouldn’d Stop talking about it. I was listening to his story on cassette tape the day I said fortuitously “I am a Catholic” with tears in my eyes.

With more tears in eyes I met Dr. Howard and Steubenville and gave him a pre-manuscript copy of my book Crossing the Tiber. I later gave him a dedication in my next book Upon this Rock. This is still on the inside of the cover, now published with Ignatius Press,

To Thomas Howard, who courageously journeyed beyond the boundaries of his Fundamentalist Protestant roots to discover the glory of the Catholic Church and, in so doing, broke through a hidden barrier, opening the door for thousands of orphaned souls to glimpse the light. But even more than that, he wrote Evangelical Is Not Enough and, in so doing, made it possible for me, my family, and countless friends and fellow Evangelicals to find the Catholic Church, which, from our birth, had been darkly shrouded by grotesque caricatures and misinformation. His life and pages have enabled us to embark on a great love affair with the ancient Church, which we have found to be forever young. For this great treasure, we owe an eternal debt of gratitude.

With his usual eloquent learnedness and charming style Dr. Thomas explains his 50 year journey from Fundamentalist Protestantism, through the Anglican Church into the Catholic Church. By the way, this is the first ever episode of EWTN’s The Journey Home.
